Election Violence: I’ve Been Vindicated by Interior Minister’s Report – Hawa Koomson

Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, says she feels vindicated by the findings of the Interior Minister’s report on the Kasoa election-related shooting incident, which she says clears her of years of “harsh and unfair” public condemnation.

The report, presented by Minister for the Interior Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, confirmed that the 2024 Kasoa violence was the result of security lapses and institutional failures, not the actions or instigation of any individual politician.

According to the findings, Philis Naa Koryoo Okunnor—now the Member of Parliament for the constituency—denied that her convoy was attacked and affirmed that she was not near the scene of the shooting.

In a statement issued on Thursday, November 6, 2025, Madam Koomson said the minister’s conclusions validate what she had “always maintained” — that the tragedy was the product of systemic failures in election security coordination, not political orchestration.

“For years, I endured harsh and unfair public attacks. I was branded violent, reckless, and unfit for office through sensational and misleading headlines. The Interior Minister’s findings have vindicated me, confirming that the violence was not directed by me but stemmed from broader systemic failures,” she said.

Madam Koomson recounted the personal and professional toll the controversy took, describing it as one of the most painful chapters of her public life. She recalled an instance in which she was physically assaulted while monitoring a rerun of polling stations in Ablekuma North — an experience she said reflected how false narratives can endanger lives and reputations.

The former Minister for Special Development Initiatives extended her sympathies to the families of all victims of election-related violence and urged the government to fully implement the Interior Minister’s recommendations.

These recommendations include compensation for victims, enhanced police training, use of non-lethal crowd control tools, and an end to military involvement in election operations.

Madam Koomson also appealed to political leaders, institutions, and the media to promote accuracy and responsibility in public discourse.

“This moment calls not for blame, but for introspection, justice, and national unity. May this truth restore faith in our institutions and strengthen our democracy,” she concluded.

The Kasoa shooting incident, which occurred during the 2024 elections, drew widespread outrage and accusations of political violence. The Interior Minister’s report now shifts attention toward institutional accountability, marking a significant step toward resolving one of Ghana’s most contentious election controversies.
