EC Rules Out Immediate Re-run in Ablekuma North

The Electoral Commission (EC) has ruled out the possibility of an immediate re-run of the 2024 parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North constituency, stressing that the final results can still be determined once outstanding data from three polling stations are collated.

This assurance came during a parliamentary session on Thursday, June 19, when Dr Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairperson of the EC in charge of Corporate Affairs, addressed lawmakers on the status of the unresolved parliamentary contest.

“We have not reached the point where we can say we don’t have the results,” Dr Asare told Parliament. “When we try and we cannot get the results, that is when we will resort to a re-run. The re-run will be a last option.”

The EC’s inability to complete the collation has been linked to security concerns, with the Ghana Police Service reportedly awaiting legal guidance from the Attorney General’s Department on how best to ensure a peaceful and secure collation process.

The delay has heightened tensions in the constituency, as supporters of rival candidates await a final declaration more than six months after the general elections.

In the same address, Dr Asare disclosed that the EC spent a combined GHS 6 million on the reprinting of ballots for the 2024 elections in parts of the Eastern and Western Regions—specifically GHS 3.6 million on presidential ballots and GHS 2.4 million on parliamentary ballots.

The revelation underscores the logistical and financial challenges the EC faced during the 2024 general elections, which were marred in some areas by errors that necessitated reprints and delays.
