“Do not let us make that mistake again”—Akufo-Addo warns on Agenda 111 risk under NDC

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has raised concerns about the future of the Agenda 111 hospital projects, cautioning that their completion could be jeopardised if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) returns to power.

He urged Ghanaians to carefully consider the potential risk of halting ongoing developments should former President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC take office after the 2024 elections.

Addressing professional groups in the Ashanti Region on Sunday, November 25, the president expressed doubt about the NDC’s commitment to the initiative, given their previous criticisms of the ambitious hospital construction project.

“The Agenda 111 is not in their hearts. Those that are not finished will not be finished. We have seen it before; do not let us make that mistake this time,” President Akufo-Addo warned.

He emphasised his administration’s dedication to completing key health infrastructure projects before his tenure ends in January 2025. Highlighting progress, he noted:

  • The Sewua Infectious Disease Centre has been handed over for use.
  • The Komfo Anokye Maternity and Children’s Hospital is 68% completed.
  • The Asante Akyem District Hospital is completed.
  • The Kumawu District Hospital is also completed.

Akufo-Addo encouraged voters, especially in the Ashanti Region, to critically assess the developmental strides under his government and the potential for setbacks if leadership changes.

“With the way some people talk of these projects, the people of Ashanti should think very carefully about December 7. I am convinced that some people will come into office and stop a lot of these projects,” he cautioned.

The president’s remarks underline the significance of the Agenda 111 project, which aims to improve healthcare access nationwide by constructing hospitals in underserved districts. His administration has committed to commissioning completed projects to strengthen healthcare infrastructure before his exit from office.
