Court clears Joana Gyan Cudjoe to run for Amenfi Central parliamentary seat

The Sekondi High Court has lifted an injunction that had barred Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Amenfi Central, from contesting in the 2024 parliamentary elections.

The ruling has ended months of legal battles, clearing her to officially stand as the NDC’s choice for the constituency.

Cudjoe’s candidacy had been under contention since she won the party’s primaries in May 2023. Following her victory, some NDC members filed a lawsuit challenging the results, leading to an injunction that temporarily stopped her candidacy.

In response, the NDC’s Functional Executive Committee annulled the results and held fresh primaries in September 2024, which Cudjoe won again. However, the Electoral Commission disqualified her due to the standing injunction from the May election dispute.

Seeking to protect her candidacy, the NDC took the matter back to court. On November 11, 2024, Justice George K. Gyan-Kontoh ruled in Cudjoe’s favour, noting that the grounds for the injunction no longer applied given that a new primary had been held and the incumbent MP, Kwakye Ackah, had chosen not to participate. The ruling affirms her status as the party’s candidate and allows her to continue her campaign.

Following the verdict, Cudjoe expressed relief and gratitude, calling the ruling a “vindication” and stating her readiness to serve her constituency.
