Canal+ Seals $2 Billion Takeover of MultiChoice

French media giant Canal+ has finalised its $2 billion acquisition of MultiChoice Group, cementing its dominance in Africa’s pay-TV market and forming what it calls a “global media and entertainment powerhouse.”

The transaction, Canal+’s largest to date, brings together operations serving over 40 million subscribers across nearly 70 countries, positioning the group as a central player in global broadcasting and African entertainment.

MultiChoice—the parent company of DStv and GOtv—confirmed the completion of the deal following regulatory approval. It assured customers that the merger would not disrupt existing services.

“Will my DStv or GOtv service be affected? No. Services continue as normal,” the companies said in a joint statement. They emphasised that packages, pricing, access, customer support, billing, and local branches will remain unchanged for subscribers.

The combined leadership will feature Maxime Saada, CEO of Canal+, alongside Calvo Mawela, CEO of MultiChoice, and David Mignot. Saada described the merger as a landmark moment:

“Together, we will bring you more of what you love — African stories, world-class entertainment, and exciting innovations for the future.”

A Global Media Powerhouse

Headquartered in France, Canal+ operates across Europe, Africa, and Asia, with more than 25 million subscribers worldwide. It is renowned for premium sports coverage, original films, documentaries, children’s programming, and its film production arm, StudioCanal.

MultiChoice, a household name in Africa, brings popular platforms DStv and GOtv under the Canal+ umbrella, expanding its reach and strengthening its African content portfolio.

What Customers Need to Know

  • No service disruption: Subscribers keep their decoders, apps, and accounts.
  • No immediate changes to packages, pricing, or access.
  • Customer support remains unchanged via existing branches and call centres.
  • Billing continues through the same channels.

For millions of households across Africa, the deal represents continuity rather than disruption in the short term, while setting the stage for expanded content offerings and deeper investment in African storytelling.
