Buttey Takes Charge as NPP Chair Ntim Steps Down Over Health Issues

Danquah Smith Buttey, the First Vice Chairperson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is currently leading a critical National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in the absence of National Chairman Stephen Ayensu Ntim, who has been temporarily excused from official duties due to medical reasons.

This development follows a formal letter submitted to the party’s Council of Elders by Mr Ntim’s family, requesting his exemption from active political duties, citing “cognitive dissonance and mental incapacitation”. The letter, dated June 16, 2025, emphasised that continued involvement in party affairs could aggravate his condition and infringe on his right to recovery.

Signed by family head Kingsley Oteng, Member of Parliament Adelaide Ntim, and other close relatives, the letter acknowledged Mr Ntim’s decades-long dedication to the NPP—from serving as First National Deputy Chairman to assuming the top leadership role.

“Steve is not well at the moment,” the letter stated, appealing for his exemption from the NEC meeting scheduled for June 17 at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, which he was originally expected to chair.

“Common sense dictates that Steve, as a matter of urgency, be temporarily excused, not only from the rigours of active politics but from intra-party activities in order to make way for needed peace and solace and for concentration on the ongoing required medical treatment process,” it added.

In response, Mr Buttey has assumed the role of acting chair for the ongoing NEC session. The agenda includes a review of the Constitutional Review Committee’s work, discussions on internal party reforms, and strategic preparations ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Puretvonline has independently confirmed Mr Buttey’s leadership at the meeting, marking a temporary but significant shift in the party’s national leadership as it navigates a pivotal period of introspection and reorganisation.
