BPS Pushes for Arrest of Asutifi North MP After Violent Clash with NAIMOS Team

The Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) has called for the immediate arrest and investigation of the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Hon. Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, and his alleged accomplices, following a violent attack on officers from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) at Bronikrom near Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Monday, November 3, 2025, the BPS described the assault—which targeted the NAIMOS Director of Operations and his team—as a blatant obstruction of law enforcement and an attack on the authority of the State.

“This act constitutes a clear obstruction of law enforcement officers in the discharge of their lawful duties and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms,” the statement said.

According to the Bureau, Hon. Addo allegedly led a group of thugs who launched the attack on the anti-galamsey task force during an official operation. The confrontation reportedly led to property destruction, injuries, and endangered the lives of both military personnel and civil officers involved in the mission.

The Bureau has outlined a five-point demand, urging swift and decisive action from the security agencies and Parliament:

  1. Immediate arrest and interrogation of Hon. Addo and all individuals involved in the assault.
  2. A comprehensive investigation by the Ghana Police Service, with support from the Ghana Armed Forces, into the MP’s role and how the case was handled at the Hwidiem Police Station.
  3. Protection for NAIMOS officers, soldiers, and witnesses to ensure their safety during investigations.
  4. A parliamentary inquiry to determine possible disciplinary or criminal sanctions against the MP if found culpable.
  5. Enhanced security protocols for all anti-illegal mining task forces operating nationwide.

“No individual, regardless of political office or influence, is above the law,” the Bureau emphasised. “Such attacks embolden criminal networks and weaken Ghana’s collective fight against illegal mining — a menace ravaging our water bodies, forests, and livelihoods.”

The statement follows reports that NAIMOS military officers came under attack by a mob while conducting an anti-galamsey operation near Hwidiem. The officers had earlier arrested two suspected illegal miners, seized vehicles and weapons, and shut down a mining site located just 10 metres from the Hwidiem–Goaso Highway.

Several suspects, including a Burkinabe national, were arrested, and the site—which exhibited severe land degradation and polluted water bodies—has since been sealed off.

Calm has been restored to the area, and the detained suspects are assisting police with investigations.

The Bureau of Public Safety says it will continue to monitor the case closely and may petition both the Speaker of Parliament and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to ensure accountability and uphold the rule of law.
