Appiah Kubi Demands Urgent NPP Constitutional Reforms to Combat Monetisation Crisis

Hon. Andy Kwame Appiah Kubi, Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, has called for a comprehensive amendment of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) constitution to address what he describes as the destructive impact of monetisation within the party.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points program on Saturday, December 28, Appiah Kubi criticised the party’s internal processes, warning that unchecked monetisation threatens the survival and integrity of the NPP.

“The NPP constitution is so flawed and needs amendment. Monetisation has gradually taken over the party,” he said.

Appiah Kubi’s remarks come in the wake of the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, where John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured 56.55% of the valid votes, while NPP’s candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, garnered 41.61%.

The NPP has announced plans to establish an election review committee in January 2025 to assess its performance and propose reforms.

At a press conference, NPP National Chairman Stephen Ayesu Ntim acknowledged the disappointing outcome but reaffirmed the party’s commitment to rebuilding.

“We may not have won the battle, but we haven’t lost the war on the quest for a better Ghana, shaped by the ideals and philosophies of the New Patriotic Party,” Ntim stated.

He outlined plans for the committee to engage stakeholders and analyse the factors contributing to the party’s defeat.

Appiah Kubi’s call for constitutional reform is expected to take centre stage in the party’s reorganisation efforts. He highlighted the need to curb monetisation in internal elections, a practice he believes undermines fairness and transparency.

“The monetisation of our internal processes is detrimental to the survival of the party. We must act now to preserve the NPP’s core values,” he urged.

As the NPP prepares for introspection and reform, Appiah Kubi’s concerns signal a push for structural changes to ensure the party’s resilience and competitiveness in future elections.
