The political temperature in Akwatia has hit boiling point as Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin claims he has received death threats from Chief Sofo Azorka, National Vice Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The explosive development occurred on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, when Afenyo-Markin stormed the NDC’s party office in Akwatia on an unannounced visit—a move that angered party executives and sparked a fierce confrontation.
A visibly agitated Azorka branded the Effutu MP’s visit “highly disrespectful” and “provocative”, accusing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of engaging in intimidation tactics to unsettle NDC supporters ahead of the crunch by-election.

But Afenyo-Markin fired back, alleging that the NDC stalwart went beyond insults and openly threatened to kill him.
“I have heard that the NDC’s Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, said that he wants to ‘kill’ me. We know them—the infamous Azorka Boys; all they know is beating people up and killing others. So, this is not his first time threatening people. But I am not a coward,” he declared defiantly.
The Minority Leader, rallying his party’s grassroots, urged NPP supporters not to allow Azorka’s alleged threats to shake their resolve.
“There are foot soldiers on the ground. Nobody should let the words of Azorka put fear into anybody. We do not do politics with fear—it’s all about courage. Our forebearers spent time in jail all for the sake of politics, so don’t let anybody put fear into you,” Afenyo-Markin said.
The bitter exchanges have heightened tensions in Akwatia, already bracing for one of the fiercest by-elections in recent history. The NPP and NDC have intensified their campaigns, raising concerns among observers that the contest could spiral into violence if not carefully monitored.
