The Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has cautioned that prophets and spiritual leaders who ignore the new national directive on the handling of prophecies will face intense public scrutiny.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, August 11, Mr Afriyie Ankrah emphasised that while no legal penalties will be imposed on those who defy the directive, public opinion will serve as a strong tool for accountability.
“There is nothing like an arrest when they defy the directive, but society will judge them if they don’t obey. They used to complain that they did not have access to victims, and now they have been given access,” he said.

The directive, issued on Sunday, August 10, by the Office of the Presidential Envoy, calls on religious leaders across the country to submit any prophecy or spiritual revelation of national importance to the office for urgent review before making it public.
It specifically targets prophecies concerning high-profile political figures, governance, national security, and other issues that could affect public stability.
The move follows a surge of prophetic messages shared online after the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, which claimed the lives of eight prominent individuals.
The victims included:
- Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah
- Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed
- Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed
- Former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye
- NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong
- Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
- Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu
- Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah
On Sunday, August 10, Ghanaians gathered to honour two of the victims—Dr Murtala Muhammed and Muniru Mohammed—ahead of a state funeral for all eight, scheduled for Friday, August 15, at the Black Star Square.
Mr Afriyie Ankrah explained that the policy is not aimed at silencing religious expression but at promoting responsibility in the dissemination of sensitive revelations. He noted that the measure seeks to prevent fear, misinformation, and potential unrest.
“This is about protecting national stability and ensuring that spiritual insights are communicated in ways that do not incite panic or create unnecessary tension,” he said.
