The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has extended financial support worth GH¢105,000 to assist members of the Volta Region Students’ Association (VORSA) at the University of Ghana, Legon, in settling their school fees.
The donation, presented at his office on Tuesday, covered the fees of 33 students identified by the association as struggling with financial difficulties.
In addressing the beneficiaries, the Effutu MP encouraged them to remain steadfast in their academic pursuits despite the economic challenges they face. He reminded the students that perseverance, hard work, and faith in God could help them rise above their present struggles.

“Life has never been easy. It is rough. But with your determination and your faith in God, trust me, no danger can overcome you,” Mr Afenyo-Markin said.
Drawing from his own life story, the minority leader recounted the hardships he endured as a student. He revealed that his father lost his job at age 39, his stepfather—once an active politician—was demoted to a watchman, and his mother, a pupil teacher, also lost her job.
“At some point, I had no money at all. I walked long distances, struggled to pay my fees, and survived on the generosity of others. But here I am today,” he told the students, urging them not to give up, even when battling depression or uncertainty.
He assured them that his gesture was part of a broader commitment to youth and education. “I have 33 names here, and the total support for your fees comes up to GH¢105,000. I will hand it over to your leader to ensure transparency. Always knock on my door; this is just the beginning,” he said.
On behalf of the beneficiaries, Gideon Senator Xorvi, President of VORSA-Legon, expressed profound appreciation to the Minority Leader for both the financial assistance and the mentorship offered.
He stressed that VORSA-Legon is a non-partisan, non-profit student body and not aligned with any political party, contrary to public assumptions.
“People often think we are tied to one political party, but that is not the case. VORSA-Legon is a non-partisan, non-profit group with members across political lines,” he clarified.
Mr Xorvi assured that the beneficiaries would remain committed to academic excellence and uphold the values of hard work and resilience emphasised by the Minority Leader.
“We are very grateful for this, and we pray for the gift of life so that this kind of support will continue in the years ahead,” he added.
