ACEP Engages Journalists on Public Finance Management and Anti-Corruption Reporting

The Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has organised an intensive educational session for journalists and bloggers at the Fiesta Royal Hotel in Accra.

The session aimed to enhance media professionals’ understanding of public finance management and anti-corruption reporting in Ghana.

Speaking at the event, Kofi Bentil, the legal director for IMANI Ghana, urged journalists to hold leaders accountable to prevent corruption from taking deeper roots in the country. He emphasised that a lack of accountability allows leaders to make decisions that push the country in the wrong direction.

“Our inability to hold leaders accountable for their actions permits them to lead the country astray. Journalists have a critical role in questioning authority and demanding transparency,” Bentil stated.

He further explained that structures within governance regulate conduct, and without scrutiny from the media, leaders may not be compelled to act in the public’s best interest.

Bentil acknowledged that while many leaders have good intentions, the systems in place often force them to conform to practices that may not always serve the public’s best interest.

He encouraged journalists to be courageous in their pursuit of accountability, even though it may not be easy.

“At the beginning, it may be difficult to challenge the status quo. But once people recognise that your motives are rooted in truth and justice, the universe will conspire in your favour,” he assured.

Bentil also advised journalists to acknowledge and correct mistakes when they occur.

“Admitting when you’re wrong and apologising is a mark of integrity. While freedom of speech is enshrined in the constitution, journalists must also be mindful of defamation laws and ethical reporting standards,” he cautioned.

The educational session is part of ACEP’s broader initiative to empower journalists with the necessary knowledge and skills to report effectively on governance, financial management, and corruption-related issues in Ghana.
