Ablekuma North Violence: Eight Convicted, Fined GH¢6,000 Each

The Accra Circuit Court has convicted and sentenced eight men who unleashed violence during the Ablekuma North by-election, handing down fines of GH¢6,000 each or, in default, 24 months’ imprisonment.

The convicts—Mohammed Abubakari, Tijani Mahmudu, Prince Dzakpasu, Anas Mohammed, Mohammed Hamda, Darko Otibu Samuel, Musah Muntari, and Ali Saeed (alias Bomba)—appeared before His Honour Isaac Addo on Friday, August 29, 2025, where they all pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit assault and three counts of assault, contrary to Sections 23(1) and 84 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Prosecutors told the court that the chaos unfolded at the Methodist Church Polling Station, where the accused launched an unprovoked attack on political figures and bystanders.

The victims included:

  • Hawa Mavis Koomson, former Minister of State and ex-MP for Awutu Senya East
  • Majeed Mohammed Saana, a trader
  • Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei, Deputy Organiser of the NPP

According to the prosecution, Mrs Koomson and Mr Saana were first assaulted before the gang turned on Mr Kwei.

Disturbing videos of the violence quickly went viral on social media, fuelling public outrage and renewed concerns over electoral security.

The case, which began on Monday, August 26, 2025, was expedited after the accused admitted guilt. Their swift conviction is being seen as a strong statement by the judiciary against electoral violence.

Each man was ordered to pay 500 penalty units (GH¢6,000) or serve two years in prison if unable to pay.
