Starlink launches high-speed internet services in Ghana

Starlink, the satellite internet service from SpaceX, has officially launched in Ghana, promising to transform internet connectivity with its high-speed, low-latency connections. This new service aims to improve how Ghanaians connect, learn, and work online, offering a viable alternative to traditional internet services in the country.

Starlink’s service leverages a constellation of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, which provide faster internet speeds and lower latency compared to traditional geostationary satellites. As of April 2024, Starlink operates approximately 5,800 LEO satellites, enabling efficient signal relay and download speeds exceeding 100 Mbps in certain regions. This positions Starlink as a formidable player in the global internet market, capable of reaching areas that were previously underserved.

Starlink Service Plans and Pricing in Ghana

Starlink offers a variety of service plans tailored to different needs, ranging from household use to business and mobile connectivity:

Standard Plan: Priced at GH₵770 per month, this plan offers unlimited data, making it an ideal choice for households that require consistent and reliable internet access.

Priority Plan: At GH₵1,078 per month, this plan is geared towards businesses or heavy internet users. It offers unlimited standard data with additional features such as public IP access, network priority, and priority customer support, ensuring faster and more reliable service for critical operations.

Mobile Plan: Starting at GH1,540 per month, the Mobile Plan is designed for remote workers, campers, and businesses operating across various locations. It provides unlimited mobile data within Ghana, with prices increasing based on the level of priority data required, offering flexibility for those on the move.

Hardware and Setup Costs

To access Starlink’s services, customers will need to purchase the necessary hardware, which is priced at GH¹5,390. Additionally, there is a shipping cost of GH₵354. These initial setup costs are essential for customers to connect to Starlink’s satellite network.

With its launch in Ghana, Starlink is set to provide a significant boost to internet connectivity across the country, especially in rural and remote areas. By offering high-speed, reliable internet, Starlink could play a crucial role in bridging the digital divide, fostering economic development, and enhancing educational opportunities for Ghanaians.
