Rice farmer shot dead on farm in Volta Region

In the Volta Region’s South Tongu District, a rice farmer and grower of Tongu rice named Yorve, close to Agordome, was shot and killed on his property.

Owner of the Sinagro Guest House in Sogakope, Sina Peter, in his mid-40s, was shot by unidentified assailants on Monday, May 20, at approximately 7 p.m. He was declared dead upon arrival at the Sogakope District Hospital.

The tragedy happened as Mr. Peter and his colleagues were harvesting rice, according to Johnson Kobby Amedzo, the Assembly Member for the Xikpo-Agbagorme Electoral Area and a friend of the dead.

According to him, the perpetrators had shot one of his employees before shooting the deceased, who also owned a rice mill site at Akakpokope close to Dabala Junction.

He claimed, “The deceased met his untimely death as he was shot in an attempt to check who was shot during the act after hearing gunshots.”

According to Mr. Amedzo, Kafui was later sent to the Ho Teaching Hospital, where he is presently undergoing treatment. He also stated that the families of the deceased were in contact with the Sogakope Police to obtain further details about the unfortunate event.

He urged the public to come forward with information that could help apprehend the offenders.

Sources speculated that the action might have been brought about by a land dispute between the dead and a few other people.

When approached, the Sogakope Police, however, would not comment on the incident and would only say that investigations were still on.

The deceased, who was also a former Brazil Rice marketing manager, was married and had three girls and a boy as children.

Since then, the body has been taken to the mortuary in Sogakope District, where an autopsy is scheduled.
