Attack On Apostle Nyamekye Unacceptable And A Threat To Respectful Public Engagement- Christian Council
The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has strongly condemned the recent attack on Apostle Eric Nyamekye, describing it as unacceptable and a threat to respectful public engagement in national discourse.
In a statement issued by its General Secretary, Rev. Dr Cyril Fayose, the Council criticised comments made by Dr Mary Awusi, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, against the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, who also serves as Chairman of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC).
The Council stressed that while public debate, particularly on national issues such as illegal mining (galamsey), is essential in promoting citizen participation in governance, such engagements must be conducted without bigotry, rancour, or animosity.
While condemning the attack, the CCG welcomed the unqualified apology issued by Dr Awusi on April 24, 2026, as well as the government’s subsequent apology delivered by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, on April 26, 2026.
In line with Christian values, the Council commended Apostle Nyamekye for accepting the apologies and urged the broader Christian community to extend forgiveness to Dr Awusi.
The CCG further expressed concern over the growing trend of politically and religiously charged commentary, cautioning that such incidents often driven by extreme partisanship must not be allowed to take root in Ghana’s public space.
It therefore called on citizens to engage constructively in national discussions, emphasising the need for mutual respect, tolerance, and unity in addressing the country’s challenges.
