“Take Galamsey Seriously” – Chinese Embassy Tells Ghana

The Chinese Embassy in Ghana has reiterated its support for the government’s intensified fight against illegal mining, widely known as galamsey, calling for stronger national commitment to ending the long-running crisis.

Chinese Ambassador Tong Defa gave the assurance during a training session on “Green Mining: Best Practices for Responsible Reporting” organised by the Ghana News Agency at Peduase on Thursday, December 11.

He noted that while China remains ready to partner with Ghana in promoting responsible mining, the country can only make meaningful progress if both state institutions and citizens take the fight seriously.

“We support the Ghanaian government to tackle this problem. As I have said many times, Ghanaians must take the galamsey issue seriously. If you do not take it seriously, there is no simple way out,” the Ambassador cautioned.

Ambassador Tong also appealed to the media to adopt fair and factual reporting when covering issues relating to Ghana–China relations. He warned against narratives that unfairly portray the entire Chinese community in Ghana based on the misconduct of a few individuals found in galamsey operations.

He emphasised that China encourages its nationals in Ghana to operate strictly within the law and remains committed to collaborating with Ghana to advance environmentally responsible mining practices.

The workshop brought together journalists and environmental advocates to enhance reporting on sustainable mining and promote public awareness on the environmental costs of illegal mining.
