Gov’t Launches Responsible Cooperative Mining Programme to Curb Galamsey

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has launched the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme in Bibiani, Western North Region, as part of renewed efforts to formalise small-scale mining and clamp down on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking at the launch, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah said the initiative will provide artisanal and small-scale miners with training and licensing opportunities to enable them to adopt environmentally friendly practices.

He announced the establishment of a Mobile Mining Licensing Unit in Bibiani to streamline the licensing process and offer education on sustainable mining methods that will protect water bodies and safeguard natural resources.

“This programme is about equipping small-scale miners with the right knowledge and tools so that they mine responsibly while also safeguarding the environment for future generations,” the minister stated.

Adu Gyamfi, Chairman of the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Small-Scale Miners Association, welcomed the initiative, urging miners to take advantage of the programme to regularise their operations. He noted that securing proper licences will protect their livelihoods and ensure compliance with national regulations.

The Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme is part of the government’s broader strategy to formalise the small-scale mining sector, strengthen regulation, and eradicate environmentally destructive galamsey practices.
