The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has assured that all 300 permanent staff of AirtelTigo (AT Ghana) will retain their jobs as the government pushes forward with a restructuring plan to stabilise the struggling telecom operator.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, September 5, 2025, Mr George emphasised that the government’s intervention is designed to safeguard workers, protect subscribers, and build a stronger competitor in Ghana’s telecom sector.
“The government will ensure that the approximately 300 permanent staff of AT retain their employment. I repeat, they will retain their employment. There will be no job losses. I have already met with the staff and offered them assurances in this regard,” he stressed.

He added that the government had also directed its transaction advisor, KPMG, to consider the fate of over 200 contract staff, noting that their future would form part of the broader recommendations expected within the next 60 days.
The restructuring, according to the ministry, is not a merger or an acquisition but rather an emergency intervention to address AT Ghana’s deepening financial crisis.
“Let me be very clear, and I need to be very, very clear on this, because we have seen media reportage: this is not a merger; it is also not an acquisition. We are dealing with a force majeure situation, and the work of the transaction advisor and the recommendations from the report will lay out a clear path for government consideration,” Mr George explained.
The Minister praised AT Ghana staff for their professionalism and resilience despite the company’s difficulties, assuring them that the government remained committed to shielding them and their families from any adverse impact.
“I am fully aware of the gravity of the current situation for the workers, their families, and their dependents, but I remain committed on behalf of the government to protect them from any adverse situation. We will see sunshine very soon; it will happen,” he said.
The restructuring plan follows AT Ghana’s recent site disconnections by ATC Ghana over unpaid debts, which triggered fears of widespread service disruption for the company’s three million subscribers. The government moved swiftly to establish national roaming with Telecel Ghana, ensuring that AT users still had access to calls, SMS, data, and AT Money services.
Mr George concluded by urging all stakeholders—subscribers, tower companies, suppliers, and creditors—to remain patient until the transaction advisor’s report is completed.
“The outcome of the transaction advisor’s work will provide clarity on outstanding debt, services, and the future of AT Ghana,” he assured.
