Deputy Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko-Computer, has declared that the party is fully prepared for the upcoming Akwatia by-election slated for September 2, 2025.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Sammi Wiafe on Wednesday, August 20, Mr Tanko-Computer emphasised that the NDC had invested heavily in the campaign and was leaving no stone unturned ahead of the crucial contest.
“We have invested a lot, and the NDC is battle-ready for Akwatia,” he asserted, adding that the party had strategically positioned itself to secure victory.

He also highlighted the importance of security arrangements to ensure a peaceful process, stressing that the NDC would respect measures put in place by the police.
“We’re respecting the police with their structure and the plan they have put in place. Nobody is going to bring pepper spray there. Everybody is going to be searched; they are going to search everybody. All the entrances of Akwatia will be cordoned, and they will search them,” he explained.
Tanko-Computer, however, raised concerns about the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) tactics, alleging that some of their activists, particularly women, have a history of carrying pepper spray during elections.
“Especially, NPP ladies’ bags will be searched because we don’t trust them. They have a history of carrying pepper spray,” he alleged.
The Akwatia by-election was triggered by the sudden passing of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, earlier this year. The Electoral Commission (EC) has since set September 2, 2025, for voters in the constituency to elect a new representative.
The by-election is expected to be fiercely contested as both the governing NPP and opposition NDC battle to secure the seat, which is considered one of the key constituencies in the Eastern Region.
