The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has issued a stern warning to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), threatening to embark on a nationwide strike if directives from the National Labour Commission (NLC) are not implemented by the end of June.
In a statement released by GAUA, the association expressed frustration over what it described as GTEC’s refusal to comply with the NLC’s ruling issued on Monday, June 9, 2025.
The Labour Commission had directed GTEC to reinstate allowances for GAUA members that were either withdrawn or reduced last month, initiate dialogue over disparities in the Single Spine Salary Structure, and reverse a directive on office-holding restrictions affecting its members.

Despite the clarity of the NLC’s instructions, GAUA claims that no tangible action has been taken to enforce the order. The association has therefore given the government and relevant stakeholders until the end of June to comply or face industrial action that could disrupt academic and administrative functions across public universities.
Adding to the growing unrest within the tertiary education sector, the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has also issued a seven-day ultimatum to GTEC. TEWU-GH is demanding the immediate reversal of a controversial directive that mandates traditional public universities to swear in representatives of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU-TUC) onto their Governing Councils.
The dual threats of strike action signal rising tensions within the education sector and highlight long-standing grievances over labour conditions, representation, and salary structures in public tertiary institutions.
Both GAUA and TEWU-GH are urging GTEC and the government to take swift steps to avoid a sector-wide crisis that could affect university operations nationwide.
