UTAG, TUTAG, CETAG Threaten Nationwide Strike Over Delayed Book and Research Allowance

Three major unions in Ghana’s tertiary education sector — UTAG, TUTAG, and CETAG — have jointly issued a stern ultimatum to the government: release overdue book and research allowances by June 13, 2025, or face a nationwide strike.

In a joint statement released on Monday, June 9, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) expressed deep frustration over what they described as an “undue delay” in the release of the exchange rate needed to compute their allowances.

The unions said the delay has caused “significant uncertainty and frustration” for members, many of whom rely on the allowance to support their academic and research duties.

“This is not a favour. It is a statutory obligation under our Conditions of Service,” the unions stressed, adding that the continuous delay was unacceptable.

Following a joint meeting on June 8, the unions agreed to accept a late exchange rate release but warned that any payment delay beyond September 2025 will not be tolerated.

They further cautioned that failure to meet the June 13 deadline would be considered an official strike notice, setting the stage for industrial action across all public universities, technical universities, and colleges of education.

The unions called on the government to act swiftly to prevent a nationwide disruption to the academic calendar and safeguard the welfare of teaching staff and the wider education system.
