Nigeria’s internet consumption crossed the 1 million terabyte mark for the first time in January 2025, signifying a major milestone in the country’s digital evolution since the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) began tracking data usage in January 2023.
This milestone highlights the surging demand for internet services and Nigeria’s increasing dependence on digital connectivity.
Despite this achievement, total data consumption in January 2025 plummeted to 27,475 terabytes, a sharp drop from the 94,502 terabytes recorded in December 2024.

Terabytes (TB) serve as a measurement of internet usage, indicating the total volume of data transmitted over a network. One terabyte (TB) equals 1,000 gigabytes (GB) or 1,000,000 megabytes (MB), a standard used by telecom providers to track heavy data consumption, especially among businesses, streamers, and gamers.
The sudden decline in monthly data consumption may be linked to challenges faced by telecom operators such as MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria, both of which recently increased data tariffs by 50%. The higher costs could be discouraging users from consuming as much data, potentially affecting revenue growth for these providers.
Despite the decline in overall data consumption, MTN and Airtel saw notable increases in internet subscribers in January 2025. MTN gained 1.4 million new users, pushing its total internet subscriber base to 73.7 million, while Airtel added 1.08 million subscribers, bringing its total to 48.4 million.
Meanwhile, Globacom continues to struggle following a regulatory audit in April 2024 that significantly reduced its subscriber base. The company managed to add only 313,939 new users in January 2025, while 9mobile did not record any growth in subscriber numbers.
As Nigeria’s telecom landscape continues to shift, the balance between rising internet prices, data consumption, and subscriber growth will be crucial in determining the industry’s long-term trajectory.
