The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has thrown its weight behind President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to adopt a lean government, describing it as a step towards efficiency and fiscal responsibility.
In a communique issued at the conclusion of its annual Conference of Heads of Churches and Organisations at the Pentecost Convention Centre (PCC) in Gomoa Fetteh, the GPCC praised the President’s commitment to reducing waste, increasing transparency, and ensuring the prudent use of national resources.
The GPCC highlighted the importance of streamlining government ministries, departments, and agencies to eliminate redundancy and enhance productivity. The Council also underscored the need for results-driven policies that address economic and employment challenges while ensuring that every government initiative delivers value for money.

While commending President Mahama for his efforts, the GPCC urged his administration to maintain a strong focus on governance reforms throughout the next four years to ensure sustainable national development.
The conference, held under the theme, “Shining Like Stars in the World” (Philippians 2:15), focused on spiritual renewal, fellowship, and national engagement. It served as a platform for church leaders to deliberate on pressing national issues and chart a course for the moral and social transformation of Ghana.
Congratulating President Mahama on his re-election, the GPCC also celebrated Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s historic achievement as Ghana’s first female Vice-President.
The Council further acknowledged former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s early concession of defeat, describing it as a statesmanlike act that contributed significantly to a peaceful post-election transition.
The GPCC also lauded the Electoral Commission (EC), the National Elections Security Task Force, civil society organisations (CSOs), and all stakeholders for ensuring a free, fair, and transparent 2024 election. The Council described the peaceful transition of power as a reaffirmation of Ghana’s enduring democratic values.
However, the GPCC expressed concern over post-election tensions, including confusion during the collation of results in certain constituencies and recent fire outbreaks in markets that have led to the destruction of property and livelihoods. The Council urged stakeholders to remain committed to nurturing Ghana’s democracy through dialogue, mutual respect, and collaboration.
On governance, the GPCC strongly condemned the recent violence in Parliament during the ministerial vetting process, stressing that Members of Parliament (MPs) must uphold integrity, professionalism, and accountability in the discharge of their duties. The Council called on lawmakers to set a positive example for the public by prioritising national development over political conflicts.
Furthermore, the GPCC urged the government to intensify efforts against illegal mining (galamsey), highlighting its devastating impact on Ghana’s environment. The Council pointed to reports of rising cancer and renal disease cases, particularly in areas affected by galamsey, as a compelling reason for stronger environmental protection measures.
Emphasising the Church’s role in national development, the GPCC reiterated its commitment to educating congregations on environmental stewardship. It called on the government to enforce environmental laws without political bias and to implement alternative employment initiatives for those dependent on illegal mining.
The Council also addressed the moral decline in society, despite Ghana’s predominantly Christian population. It challenged the Church to take deliberate steps to promote ethical values, stressing that true transformation happens when evangelism is paired with intentional discipleship.
The GPCC reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with the government to achieve a prosperous and morally upright Ghana. It called on all citizens to embrace unity, vigilance, and a shared sense of purpose to ensure peace, progress, and prosperity for the nation.
