Akufo-Addo has instructed ex-appointees to face accountability- Richard Ahiagba reveals

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has disclosed that former President Nana Akufo-Addo has instructed his former appointees to remain accessible for any accountability processes following the end of his administration.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, February 18, Ahiagbah underscored the party’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

“We [the NPP] have no record of running away; we’ll be here,” he asserted.

His comments come in the wake of growing calls for accountability as the country transitions into a new political administration.

Mr. Ahiagbah emphasised that the former president has explicitly directed all past officials of his government to be available for any enquiries regarding their tenure. He noted that this move demonstrates the party’s dedication to upholding democratic principles.

“There’s an effective commitment right from the former president himself. He has given a directive to ensure that our people are available to do that. I just don’t want to go into the details of what he said, but there is that disposition from the former president—an indication to stay and make sure that you account for [your stewardship],” he stated.

Addressing concerns about the accountability of former officials, Ahiagbah took a swipe at the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), alleging that some of their members evaded accountability in the past.

“We’ll deal with the issues here. It was the NDC members who ran away. My own sister, Sedinam Tamakloe, disappeared. She was tried in absentia, but she ought to be here. Our party has no history of our officials fleeing from accountability,” he said.

His remarks were in response to public discourse about political figures facing corruption investigations and legal scrutiny after leaving office.

The discussion also touched on the recent development involving former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who was previously declared wanted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). The OSP had accused him of being unwilling to appear before them. However, Ofori-Atta’s legal representatives argued that he had informed the Chief of Staff about his medical condition and his intent to seek treatment abroad while remaining available when needed.

Despite the ongoing scrutiny, Mr. Ahiagbah reiterated that the NPP remains focused on rebuilding and preparing for the 2028 elections.

“Our preoccupation is how we get our party situated and contest the 2028 election. Matters to do with accountability—our people will be here to answer the questions,” he assured.

Defending the record of the Akufo-Addo administration, Ahiagbah expressed confidence that history would judge their government favourably.

“We came to do the best we can. And I believe that when the dust settles, Ghana will see what we have done for the eight years,” he concluded.

The NPP’s stance on accountability will likely continue to shape the political discourse as the nation navigates its post-Akufo-Addo era.
