Ken Ofori-Atta to return to Ghana May 30

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has officially notified the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) that he will return to Ghana on May 30, 2025, to face investigations regarding multiple high-profile corruption cases.

This development follows weeks of legal and political uncertainty after the OSP declared him a wanted fugitive for failing to present himself for questioning. Ofori-Atta’s legal team had earlier submitted a letter from a U.S. medical facility, claiming he was undergoing treatment abroad with no definite return date.

Ofori-Atta is under investigation in relation to five major corruption cases, including:

  • The SML scandal
  • Mismanagement of National Cathedral funds
  • The Ambulance Rehabilitation controversy
  • Two additional undisclosed cases

The OSP had pushed back against his indefinite stay abroad, insisting that someone accused of such severe financial misconduct could not use medical treatment as a shield against prosecution.

With his newly confirmed return date, legal experts speculate whether Ofori-Atta’s move is a calculated strategy to de-escalate tensions or a genuine effort to comply with the OSP’s directives. While his name could be removed from the wanted list, he remains a key figure in the investigations and will be expected to answer for the allegations upon his arrival.
