Effutu Traditional Council Backs Afenyo-Markin Amid Land Acquisition Criticism

The Effutu Traditional Council has firmly defended Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Member of Parliament and Minority Leader, against criticism over his acquisition of land from the Paramountcy for development projects.

Speaking at the launch of the 2025 Aboakyer Festival, Omanhene Neenyi Ghartey VII dismissed the backlash as misguided and baseless, insisting that the council fully supports efforts to drive development in Effutu.

The Omanhene expressed concern over the level of opposition Afenyo-Markin has faced, questioning why a native of Effutu should be denied access to land while outsiders and foreign investors acquire land without similar resistance.

“It is unfortunate that some people are trying to sabotage the development of our land. Why should Afenyo-Markin, a son of Effutu, be denied land when others from different regions and even foreign nationals have access without issues?” he asked.

Neenyi Ghartey VII emphasised the Effutu Traditional Council’s commitment to development, highlighting the need for:

  • Real estate projects to provide modern housing
  • Hospitality infrastructure to boost tourism
  • Job-creating initiatives to improve local livelihoods

According to him, the council’s long-term vision is to transform Winneba into a thriving economic hub, and Afenyo-Markin’s efforts align with this goal.

Despite criticism from some quarters, the Effutu Traditional Council remains steadfast in its support for projects that will bring lasting benefits to the community.

“We will not allow negativity to derail our development agenda. Our focus is on growth, and we will continue to support every effort that contributes to the prosperity of Effutu,” Neenyi Ghartey VII declared.

With the Council’s backing, Afenyo-Markin is expected to proceed with his development initiatives, ensuring that Effutu’s economic and social transformation remains on course.
