President John Dramani Mahama has instructed Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to take urgent measures to address the $156 million funding gap created by the suspension of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) program in Ghana.
In a February 11 statement, the presidency expressed deep concern over the deficit, warning that it could severely impact critical health and social intervention programs.
A particularly pressing issue is the $78.2 million shortfall, which threatens:

- Malaria prevention programs
- Maternal and child healthcare
- Family planning and reproductive health initiatives
- Nutrition programs
Additionally, the funding gap poses a serious risk to Ghana’s fight against HIV/AIDS, limiting access to antiretroviral drugs, testing, and preventive measures.
To prevent disruptions, President Mahama has directed the Finance Ministry to prioritise urgent interventions and implement immediate funding solutions.
“The government remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services and will explore all necessary measures to address the shortfall,” the statement assured.
The Finance Ministry is expected to mobilise alternative funding sources to sustain these lifesaving programs in the wake of the USAID suspension.
