Okudzeto Ablakwa Urges US to Reconsider Withdrawal from Paris Climate Accord

Foreign Affairs Minister nominee Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has called on the United States government to reconsider its withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord, describing the move as a setback to global climate action.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday, January 31, Mr. Ablakwa expressed disappointment over the US’ decision, emphasising the impact it has on international cooperation in combating climate change.

“Let me register our unhappiness at the latest withdrawal by the United States of America from the Paris Climate Accord. That was a very key intervention in the climate change agenda,” he stated.

He highlighted Ghana’s active role in global climate negotiations and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening international climate policies. He noted that the US’ exit has disrupted coordinated efforts but expressed hope that the nation would reconsider its stance.

“That has clearly created a disruption, but we will continue to urge our big brothers and sisters to come back to the climate change agenda,” he added.

Mr. Ablakwa stressed the urgency of climate action, calling on world leaders to unite in addressing environmental challenges and to commit to a sustainable future for all nations.
