The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially confirmed the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc, effective Wednesday, January 29.
The announcement was made in a press statement issued by the ECOWAS Commission.
The departure of the three countries marks a significant shift in the regional dynamics of West Africa, as Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have been pivotal contributors to ECOWAS’ regional integration efforts. Despite their exit, ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to regional solidarity and emphasised its openness to future cooperation with the countries.
In response to the withdrawal, ECOWAS has put in place transitional measures to minimise disruptions for citizens and businesses. The bloc has urged member states and relevant authorities to implement the following directives:
- Continued Recognition of National Passports and Identity Cards: Citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger holding passports or identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo will continue to have their documents recognised by ECOWAS member states, at least until further notice.
- Ongoing Trade Benefits: Goods and services originating from these three countries will continue to benefit from the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) and investment policies, ensuring that trade flows remain uninterrupted.
- Visa-Free Movement: Citizens of the three nations will retain their rights to visa-free movement, residence, and establishment within ECOWAS territories, in line with existing agreements and protocols.
ECOWAS has stated that these measures will remain in effect until a comprehensive framework for future engagement with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger is established by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
While the withdrawal marks a significant shift, ECOWAS has expressed its ongoing willingness to maintain open doors for dialogue and future collaboration with the three countries as the regional situation evolves.
