East Legon Accident: Court adjourns Salifu Amoako, wife and Sales Assistant case

The case involving Bishop Elijah Salifu Amoako, his wife Mouha, and their 16-year-old son Elrad, who were charged following a fatal accident caused by their unlicensed son, has been adjourned to February 17, 2025.

The decision came after both the defence and state attorneys requested more time during a hearing at the Accra Circuit Court on Monday.

Bishop Amoako, the General Overseer of Alive Chapel International; his wife, Mouha; and Linda Bonsu Bempah, a sales assistant, are facing charges after their son, Elrad, was involved in a tragic crash on October 12, 2024, in East Legon.

The accident led to the deaths of two young girls, aged 12, who were trapped inside a vehicle that caught fire after colliding with the SUV driven by Elrad.

The charges against Bishop Amoako, his wife, and Linda stem from their alleged role in allowing Elrad, who was not licensed to drive, to operate the vehicle. Elrad was behind the wheel of a white Jaguar F-Pace Sports SUV when he crashed into the rear of an Acura utility vehicle, causing both vehicles to collide and burst into flames. The two victims, Justine Agbenu and Maame Dwomoh Boateng, perished in the blaze.

All three accused have pleaded not guilty to the charges and are currently out on bail, set at GHC 50,000 each with two sureties.

Elrad, the teenager involved in the accident, had previously pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including manslaughter, negligent harm, dangerous driving, and driving without a license. He was sentenced to six months in prison by an Accra juvenile and family court and is currently serving his sentence at the Senior Correctional Home.

The court heard that on the day of the accident, Mouha, Elrad’s mother, had handed the vehicle keys to Linda Bonsu Bempah, despite knowing that Elrad was a minor without a driver’s license. Linda reportedly gave Elrad permission to drive, and he later collided with the Acura as they were travelling on Dzanie Ashie Street in Bawleshie.

The crash occurred near the Mensah Wood Avenue junction, where both vehicles were pushed into the wall of a nearby house. The vehicles ignited, burning beyond recognition. Two others, including Elrad, sustained injuries and were transported to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for treatment.

During investigations, both Bishop Amoako and his wife admitted to having allowed their son to drive on several occasions, including trips to the gym and other local destinations.

As the case continues to unfold, the adjournment allows the court more time to review the details, with the next hearing set for February 17.
