CETAG Suspends Strike

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has announced the immediate suspension of its three-week-long industrial action.

The decision was made during a virtual National Council meeting held on Friday, January 24, 2025.

The association’s leadership stated that the suspension of the strike was influenced by several factors, including the employer’s goodwill in migrating CETAG staff to the University Salary Structure as part of the National Labour Commission’s (NLC) Arbitration Awards.

Additionally, the recent appointment of a new Minister of Education, who has expressed a strong commitment to engaging with CETAG to resolve outstanding issues, played a significant role in the decision. The association also noted the detrimental impact of the strike on college students and the academic calendar, prompting a reconsideration of its stance.

However, CETAG highlighted that several unresolved issues remain and require immediate attention from key stakeholders, including the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and the Controller and Accountant General Department (CAGD). These issues include:

  • Payment of All Year Round Work Compensation (AYRWC): Compensation for additional work performed in 2022 across 42 colleges.
  • Arrears for Book and Research Allowances: Payment of arrears for the 2023/2024 allowance, contingent on the implementation of the NLC’s arbitral award from May 2023.
  • Top-Up Allowance Arrears: Settlement of the 2022/2023 Book and Research Allowance Top-Up for eligible staff at Akrokerri College of Education.
  • Migration and Placement Concerns: Resolution of non-migration and improper placement of certain CETAG members on the salary structure.

CETAG leaders expressed gratitude to members for their unwavering support during the strike and encouraged them to resume work immediately. They reassured members that efforts to address these outstanding issues will continue in earnest to ensure their resolution.

The association also acknowledged the contributions of the National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), FWSC, GTEC, CAGD, and the media in facilitating progress during the final stages of the migration process.

CETAG remains optimistic that its ongoing dialogue with relevant authorities will yield positive outcomes, ensuring the rights and welfare of its members are upheld while minimising disruptions to academic activities.
