President John Dramani Mahama has established a seven-member National Economic Dialogue (NED) Planning Committee as part of his 120-day Social Contract with Ghanaians.
Chaired by renowned economist Dr. Ishmael Yamson, the committee is tasked with organising a high-level economic dialogue to address Ghana’s pressing economic challenges and develop strategies for sustainable development. The committee has been given four weeks to submit its report.
The members of the committee include Dr. K.Y. Amoako, Professor John Gatsi, Mohammed Samara, Nelly Mireku, Anthony Sarpong, and Ernest De-Graft Egyir, each bringing expertise from diverse fields to tackle the country’s economic concerns.
In a statement released on January 26, 2025, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson to the President, outlined the key objectives of the National Economic Dialogue.
“The NED will offer a platform for dialogue and consultation on the country’s pressing development challenges. It will also discuss policy trade-offs and build consensus on reforms needed to transform Ghana into a high-growth, inclusive, and resilient economy,” the statement said.
Among the NED’s priorities is communicating the true state of Ghana’s economy to stakeholders and citizens. The dialogue will also focus on developing a homegrown fiscal consolidation program to guide the national budget, identifying structural reforms, and determining policy priorities for an economic reset.
The National Economic Dialogue forms a cornerstone of President Mahama’s administration’s efforts to address Ghana’s economic challenges, including fiscal sustainability, structural transformation, and economic resilience. This initiative seeks to build consensus on critical reforms while fostering inclusive economic growth and development.
