President John Dramani Mahama has acknowledged the immense pressure and high expectations surrounding his administration’s pledge to maintain a lean government while ensuring effective governance.
Speaking at the Presidential Dinner in Accra, President Mahama addressed the challenges of balancing public expectations and governance efficiency.
“You wouldn’t want to be in my shoes when you’ve promised to appoint only 60 ministers, yet thousands of people are sending in their CVs. Then, maybe some people will be disappointed,” he remarked, emphasising the difficulty of fulfilling his commitment.
The President stressed that while reducing the size of government is important, the broader success of his administration hinges on collective efforts across all sectors of society.
Reflecting on lessons from the previous administration, Mahama urged his team to avoid the pitfalls that eroded public trust in the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“The success of this administration will secure us another term, perhaps under a different leader. But we must get this right so that Ghanaians can continue to have confidence in us,” he stated.
President Mahama reassured Ghanaians of his commitment to delivering on his promises and fostering trust through a responsive and transparent government.
“There’s no use fighting for political power if we are going to repeat the same mistakes,” he cautioned, highlighting the importance of learning from the past to guide future actions.
The pledge to cap ministerial appointments at 60 has drawn widespread attention and scrutiny. While some see it as a step toward curbing government expenditure, others worry it might limit the administration’s capacity to address pressing issues.
President Mahama concluded by calling on all stakeholders to support his administration in achieving its goals, emphasising that the success of his leadership depends on unity and collaboration.
