15% VAT on electricity: Organized Labour to decide next line of action today

The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, has said the Greater Accra Regional branch of Organized Labour of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) will convene today, Thursday, at the TUC hall to decide their next line of action.

His comment follows the union’s outlined plans for a nationwide demonstration for February 13, 2024.

He told Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem monitored by puretvonline.com, Friday, that government should have the courage to withdraw the tax.

“We are meeting all the organized labour today at TUC. We have seen all the developments, but as a union, we all have to come together and decide on what to do. We are only asking the government to withdraw the tax completely,” he said.

He mentioned that, they are now contemplating on whether to continue or suspend the demonstration.

Mr. Carbonu stated that, any developments that arise will be thoroughly discussed, and Ghanaians will be informed about their decision.

On February 7, 2024, the Ministry of Finance issued instructions to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) to halt the implementation of the new tax policy until discussions with stakeholders, including Organized Labour, have taken place.

However, the Labour Unions have served notice they will demonstrate if government does not serve them with an official letter withdrawing the tax.
