1,000 Women Die in Childbirth in Ashanti Region- Ghana Health Service

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has sounded the alarm on maternal mortality, revealing that between 2020 and 2024, a staggering 1,000 women lost their lives while giving birth in the Ashanti Region.

This grim statistic highlights the persistent challenge of maternal healthcare despite continuous efforts to curb fatalities.

Speaking at the 2024 Regional Health Forum in the Ashanti Region, the Regional Health Director, Dr. Frank Adomanko Boateng, stressed the urgent need for stronger interventions to prevent maternal deaths.

“Time is not on our side as we wish to achieve the target of 70 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030. The clock is ticking, and we must double our efforts,” he declared.

Dr. Boateng acknowledged that authorities are racing against time to meet both national and global targets, particularly the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of reducing maternal mortality to 70 deaths per 100,000 live births by the end of the decade.

However, current figures indicate that the region is significantly behind in this mission.

The statistics paint a worrying picture of the state of maternal health, signalling an urgent need for improved healthcare infrastructure, increased access to quality maternal care, and the training of more skilled birth attendants.

Dr. Boateng called for a multi-faceted approach to tackling the crisis, including increased government investment, community engagement, and public health education on maternal care.

With six years left to achieve the SDG target, the Ashanti Region faces a defining moment. As stakeholders deliberate on solutions, one message remains clear: urgent action is needed now, before more lives are lost to preventable childbirth complications.
