The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the cancellation of subject results for 4,108 candidates who sat for the 2024 West African Senior High School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Ghana due to various malpractices.
Additionally, the council has cancelled the entire results of 483 candidates, withheld subject results for 781 candidates, and withheld the entire results of 209 candidates.
These actions follow an investigation into examination misconducts, which included bringing foreign materials such as prepared notes, textbooks, and printed materials into the exam halls.
The 483 candidates who had their entire results cancelled were found in possession of mobile phones during the exams, while other candidates were implicated in various other suspected offences.
WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John K. Kapi, explained that these decisions were made during the 37th meeting of the Ghana Examination Committee on December 16, 2024.
He further stated that subject results for candidates from 319 schools across the country have been withheld due to allegations of collusion, with investigations still ongoing.
A total of 460,611 candidates—212,954 males and 247,657 females—sat for the 2024 exams across 1,003 second-cycle institutions nationwide, marking a 2.66% increase from the previous year’s enrolment figure.
The number of candidates who sat for the exams in 2023 was 448,674, with 4,609 absent from the exams.
