The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has attributed the delay in releasing the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results to an outstanding debt of GH₵118 million owed by the Ministry of Education.
In a statement, WAEC revealed that while marking of essay and practical components concluded on November 29, 2024, critical post-examination processes, such as the scanning of objective test cards, have been stalled due to the breakdown of scanners.
“The Council is awaiting the release of additional funds out of the outstanding balance of GH₵118,000,000.00 from the Ministry of Education to enable the scanning process and other post-examination processes to continue smoothly,” the statement read.
WAEC assured stakeholders that results will only be released once all challenges are resolved. It also urged students, parents, and guardians to ignore unofficial release dates circulating on social media.
The Council appealed to its examination officials and suppliers, who are yet to receive payments, to remain patient. “Payment for their services will be made as soon as the needed funds are released from the Ministry of Education,” the statement added.
The delay has caused growing anxiety among candidates and their families, as the WASSCE results are crucial for university admissions and other academic plans. WAEC’s inability to proceed with post-examination processes highlights the financial and logistical difficulties faced by the Council.
Stakeholders are now calling on the Ministry of Education to expedite the release of funds to enable WAEC to complete the necessary processes and publish the results without further delay.
