Vinícius Jr should have won Ballon d’Or, it was clear- Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo has labelled Vinícius Jr.’s omission from winning the Ballon d’Or as “unfair,” commending the Globe Soccer Awards for their integrity in recognising footballing excellence.

Speaking at the 2024 Globe Soccer Awards, where Vinícius was named Best Men’s Player, Ronaldo said, “Vinícius Jr. should have won the Ballon d’Or. In my opinion, it was clear. It was unfair. This is why I love the Globe Soccer Awards; they are honest.”

The Brazilian star also won the Best Forward accolade at the ceremony, which celebrated the brightest stars in football. Vinícius’ exceptional season with Real Madrid, leading them to a La Liga and Champions League double, had made him a favourite for the Ballon d’Or.

The awards night, held in Dubai, honoured several footballing icons:

  • Jude Bellingham: Named Best Midfielder and received the Maradona Award, reflecting his stellar performances for Real Madrid and England.
  • Neymar Jr.: Awarded the Player Career Award for his enduring contributions to the sport.
  • Lamine Yamal: Barcelona’s teenage sensation was named Best Emerging Talent.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo: Recognised as the Top Goalscorer of All Time, cementing his legendary status.
  • Aitana Bonmatí: Claimed the Best Women’s Player title after a phenomenal season with Barcelona and Spain.
  • FC Barcelona Femení: Named Best Women’s Club, showcasing their dominance in women’s football.
  • Carlo Ancelotti: Honoured as Best Coach for his leadership at Real Madrid.
  • Florentino Pérez: Received a Special Career Award for his contributions to the sport.
  • Real Madrid: Named Best Club for their achievements on and off the pitch.

The Ballon d’Or was awarded to Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri, who played a key role in City’s treble-winning season and Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph. Despite his success, the decision surprised many, given Vinícius Jr.’s remarkable campaign.

Real Madrid boycotted the Ballon d’Or ceremony, accusing its organisers of disrespecting Vinícius. The club cited his pivotal contributions to their success and the global admiration he garnered throughout the season.

While Rodri’s Ballon d’Or win reflects his undeniable achievements, Ronaldo’s remarks and the Globe Soccer Awards’ recognition of Vinícius reignited debates about fairness and transparency in football’s top accolades.
