VIDEO: DVLA Introduces Reflective Sticker Number Plates to Combat Counterfeiting
The Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has unveiled a new reflective number plate system in the form of a secure sticker, aimed at combating counterfeit plates and ensuring the authenticity of vehicle registration and licensing in Ghana.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Hot FM Morning Drive, DVLA Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey revealed that fraudulent practices have plagued vehicle registration for years, with some private companies issuing fake number plates at the port, despite being provided legitimate ones by the DVLA. These illegal plates have contributed to a surge of unregistered and counterfeit vehicles on the roads.
Kotey explained that some companies contracted to issue DVLA plates had been embossing and issuing their own illegal plates instead. Consequently, contracts with these companies have been terminated to halt these fraudulent activities.

The new reflective sticker number plates, equipped with advanced security features, are designed to prevent tampering and duplication.
Kotey highlighted that the sticker can only be affixed once—attempting to remove and reuse it on another vehicle renders it unusable.
Key features of the reflective sticker include:
- QR Code Verification: The sticker contains a security QR code, allowing DVLA officials to trace and authenticate the vehicle’s registration details.
- Expiration Date: An expiry date is included to help police officers verify registration validity.
- Tamper-Proof Design: Any attempt to peel off the sticker will damage it, preventing reuse.
- Comprehensive Vehicle Details: The sticker provides detailed information about the vehicle, including its registration history.
Kotey emphasised that the new system will eliminate discrepancies at the port and ensure accurate records of vehicles issued with plates.
He added that DV plates, previously given to companies at the port, will now be exclusively issued to private garages as defective plates, awaiting permanent registration once the vehicle is sold.
The introduction of the reflective sticker number plates marks a significant step by the DVLA to restore order and integrity to Ghana’s vehicle registration system.
The authority remains committed to enhancing road safety and ensuring regulatory compliance.
