Unresolved tensions over the management of the Keta reclaimed land escalated dramatically on Sunday morning as unidentified men armed with two bulldozers partially demolished a private building belonging to the Keta Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Emmanuel Gemegah.
The men, who also demolished a fence wall belonging to another individual, Rocky Amugi, stormed the Adzido-Aflasco area near Emancipation Beach around 9 a.m.
Their actions are believed to stem from accusations that the MCE appropriated land intended for a stadium to construct a private residence.
Police intervened to halt further destruction, but the incident has added fuel to the ongoing dispute.
This demolition follows similar unrest in October 2024, when local youth attacked the MCE’s building, claiming it was illegally sited on land reserved for a stadium.
The protesters marked the building with “Stop Work” and argued that the issue was already before the High Court in Sogakope.
Despite public outcry and legal warnings, construction reportedly continued, intensifying frustrations among residents.
The Keta reclaimed lands have been a source of contention, with multiple protests over allegations that the MCE has been allocating the public land for private development.
The latest demolition underscores the community’s dissatisfaction and heightens the need for swift resolution.
Local authorities and the police are yet to identify the perpetrators, and no arrests have been made as investigations continue.
