Trucks loaded with looted state property intercepted in Sunyani West

Authorities have intercepted an Astra DAF truck loaded with tons of iron rods suspected to have been stolen from the Agenda 111 project construction site at Odumase in the Sunyani West Municipality, Bono Region.

The branded CONSAR LTD truck, with registration number GN 7469-17, was caught loading building materials from the site without authorization. Another vehicle, a truck with registration number GC 9423-11, was also seized while transporting approximately 160 state-owned streetlight bulbs from the Bono Regional Minister’s residence.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) played a key role in the operation, with some members leading the police to intercept the vehicles. In a press release signed by Bono Regional Communications Officer Charles Akowuah Tuffour, the NDC condemned the alleged looting and stressed the need for law enforcement to protect state assets.

The statement called on the public to serve as watchdogs to safeguard state property during the current political transition period.

The NDC further accused officials of the outgoing government of orchestrating the looting of state resources, citing materials such as iron rods, streetlight bulbs, and other construction items.

The release claimed that the Member of Parliament for Sunyani West, Ignatius Baffuor-Awuah, had state-owned electricity extension poles, cables, and transformers stored privately instead of in government facilities.

“This looting is a deliberate attempt by miscreants to deprive the region of essential resources,” the statement noted.

The NDC also referenced a similar incident in 2017, where the then Brong Ahafo Regional Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe (Abronye), confiscated vehicles and personal belongings from former government officials.

The party cautioned government appointees and officials to refrain from looting state property, emphasizing their accountability as heads of municipal and district security councils.

The intercepted vehicles have been handed over to the police for further investigation.

The NDC urged the authorities to act swiftly in protecting state property and prosecuting individuals involved in misappropriating public resources.

The release reiterated that state resources belong to the people and must be preserved for the region’s development, regardless of political transitions.
