TikTok removes over 2 million Nigerian videos in content policy crackdown

TikTok removed 2.1 million videos from Nigerian users in Q3 2024 for violating its content policies, placing Nigeria among the top 50 markets responsible for offending content during this period.

Globally, 147.8 million videos were taken down, with the top 50 markets accounting for 90% of these removals, according to TikTok’s Community Guidelines Enforcement report.

The removed videos breached TikTok’s policies focused on safety, authenticity, privacy, mental health, and civility. During Q3 2024, TikTok also:

  • Deleted 214.8 million accounts, including 187.3 million fake accounts and 24.3 million underage accounts (under 13).
  • Removed 1.3 billion comments, 1.1 billion inauthentic likes, and 57.2 million fake followers.
  • Suspended 12.2 million live sessions found to be in violation of guidelines.

TikTok said it remains vigilant against external threats, including fake accounts and inauthentic engagement, which attempt to exploit its platform.

The company reported a decline in ad removals for policy violations in Q3, with 1.9 million ads taken down compared to 2.2 million in Q2. TikTok reiterated its commitment to strengthening systems to detect and eliminate non-compliant ads.

Despite enforcement measures, TikTok faces growing scrutiny over its content moderation and impact on young users. In October 2024, 13 U.S. states and the District of Columbia filed lawsuits accusing the platform of failing to protect children from harm.

The lawsuits allege that TikTok’s addictive design exploits children’s vulnerabilities, negatively impacting mental health. Plaintiffs are seeking financial penalties and greater accountability, intensifying the company’s ongoing legal battles with U.S. regulators.

TikTok reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining a safe and authentic platform, emphasising that its enforcement actions are part of broader efforts to safeguard users and combat artificial popularity schemes.

However, the platform continues to navigate legal and regulatory pressures across multiple countries.
