Thieves electrocuted while attempting to steal streetlights

Two individuals met their untimely demise in the Ogobiri community of Sagbama Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, after being electrocuted while allegedly stealing solar-powered streetlights.

The tragic incident occurred on the night of Friday, December 27, and the bodies were discovered the following morning near the New Site of Niger Delta University and the Ogobiri roundabout.

According to local reports, the suspected thieves had already brought down four streetlight poles and were attempting to dismantle a fifth when it fell onto high-tension power lines. The resulting electrical discharge killed both men instantly.

Eyewitnesses speculated that the pair may have been unaware of the danger posed by the proximity of the high-tension wires.

Residents of Ogobiri have long complained about the persistent theft of solar streetlights, a menace that has left many parts of the area in darkness.

“This is not the first time thieves have targeted our solar streetlights. Unfortunately, their greed caught up with them this time,” said a local resident.

Another community member emphasised the need for better security to protect public infrastructure, calling the incident “a regrettable yet avoidable tragedy.”

Local law enforcement officers have cordoned off the area and are working to identify the deceased. Officials have also urged residents to report suspicious activities to prevent further damage to critical infrastructure.
