“The country is not broke, as some propagandists want us to believe”- President Akufo-Addo stated

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has dismissed allegations that Ghana’s economy is in dire straits, asserting that his administration is leaving the country with strong financial reserves.

Delivering his State of the Nation Address in Parliament, the president countered narratives of economic mismanagement, emphasising the government’s dedication to fiscal discipline and economic growth.

“The country is not broke, as some propagandists want us to believe,” President Akufo-Addo stated. “We’re handing over the country with gross international reserves of almost 8 billion United States dollars.”

He compared this figure to the reserves at the start of his administration, highlighting an improvement. “This is more than the 6.2 billion United States dollars of gross international reserves my administration inherited in 2017,” he added, signalling a net gain in reserves over his tenure.

The President took a firm stance against critics, urging reliance on verified data over speculation. “The noise will not shut out the statistics, and I intend to put the statistics on the record, no matter the amount of noise,” he asserted.

The President’s comments come amidst heightened debates about the state of Ghana’s economy. Opposition parties and some analysts have raised concerns over rising debt levels and economic challenges, particularly following John Dramani Mahama’s victory in the December 7 elections.
