Tensions escalate as NDC supporters besiege Greater Accra EC Office again

Supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from the Ablekuma North constituency have, for the second time, stormed the Greater Accra Regional Office of the Electoral Commission (EC).

The irate supporters clashed with security personnel, including police and military forces, deployed to the scene. The crowd is demanding the declaration of their candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, as the MP-elect amid allegations of irregularities in the collation process for the fiercely contested election.

To contain the situation, security personnel mounted barricades outside the EC office to prevent the crowd from invading the premises. However, the protesters expressed frustration over delays in finalising the results, which they attribute to disputes over 18 missing pink sheets from the presidential collation process.

Leaders of both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are currently at the EC office, urging calm among their supporters. Meanwhile, EC officials continue to face challenges in the collation process, which was moved to the regional office after chaos erupted at the constituency level on Monday.

During the initial confrontation at the Ablekuma North collation centre, agitated party supporters broke into the collation room, destroying parts of the building’s burglar-proof system, scattering pink sheets, and causing journalists and observers to flee. This disruption led to the relocation of the collation exercise to the regional EC office.

The EC has yet to declare final results for the Ablekuma North constituency, as tensions remain high. Security forces remain on high alert to prevent further chaos, and EC officials are working under pressure to complete the collation.

The situation underscores growing tensions in a highly polarised electoral process, with calls from stakeholders for restraint and dialogue to ensure peace and transparency.
