The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called for swift justice and compensation for Ishmael Famous, a teacher at Asuoso Senior High School in the Ashanti Region, who was stabbed in the left eye by a loitering student.
The incident occurred when Mr. Famous directed the student, whose name has been withheld, to return to the classroom. The attack left the teacher with a permanently damaged left eye, gravely affecting his career and quality of life.
GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Musah, has urged the police to prosecute the student and demanded that the teacher receive compensation under the Workmen’s Compensation Act.
“The law demands that if somebody is working in his line of duty, and something happens to him, he should be compensated,” Mr. Musah said. “This teacher has lost his eye while performing his lawful duty. Who will take care of his medical bills and ensure his livelihood?”
Mr. Musah emphasized that the loss of an eye severely impacts the teacher’s ability to perform his duties effectively, given the importance of vision in the teaching profession.
The GNAT General Secretary expressed frustration over alleged attempts by some individuals in the community to suppress the case. He warned that if duty bearers fail to act decisively, teachers may withdraw their services when schools reopen after the Christmas break.
“This is unacceptable. If swift action is not taken, teachers will be compelled to take drastic measures. The safety and welfare of educators must be prioritized,” Mr. Musah stressed.
The stabbing reportedly occurred on November 18, 2024. According to GNAT, the assault has not only caused permanent physical damage but also jeopardized the teacher’s career.
The association has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) and law enforcement agencies to ensure justice for the victim and to provide financial support for his medical expenses and long-term care.
GNAT’s demands include heightened protections for teachers, compensation for work-related injuries, and an assurance that educators can perform their duties without fear of harm.
Mr. Musah concluded by urging all stakeholders to recognize the critical role of teachers and ensure their safety and welfare are upheld.
This incident highlights the urgent need for stronger measures to protect educators and maintain discipline within schools.
