Ghana’s Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has emerged victorious in the fiercely contested election for Commonwealth Secretary-General, winning with overwhelming support from Commonwealth leaders.
The vote took place during a high-level retreat in Apia.
In an artwork posted by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on X, Botchwey expressed her gratitude, saying, “Grateful to Commonwealth leaders for their trust.” The Commonwealth Secretariat also confirmed the result via X, stating: “Today at #CHOGM2024, Commonwealth Heads of Government have selected the Hon.
Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, currently the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana, as the incoming Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.”
Outgoing Secretary-General Rt Hon Patricia Scotland congratulated Botchwey, posting, “It is my honour to pass the baton to my dear sister, the Hon Shirley @AyorkorBotchwey. She will be uniquely blessed, as I have been, to hold this office and serve our precious Commonwealth.”
Botchwey’s historic appointment marks a significant achievement for Ghana and the wider Commonwealth as she steps into her new role with strong support and trust from the international community.
