Karen Baaba Sam, a young Ghanaian mother, has shared a harrowing account of enduring years of physical, emotional, and verbal abuse from her ex-partner, Nana Kwadwo Adjei.
Her ordeal, which began in 2016, culminated in a bitter custody battle over their daughter, Ohemaa, and a series of threats and public humiliation.
Karen recounted how their relationship, which began on a promising note, turned violent after she became pregnant in 2018.
She described incidents of physical assault, including one where Nana, under the influence of alcohol, kicked her repeatedly despite her pregnancy.
Over the years, Karen says she endured regular beatings, leaving her with visible injuries. Despite filing police reports, no action was taken against her influential ex-partner.
The abuse escalated in 2024, when Nana allegedly attacked Karen in front of their daughter and visiting friends.
When Karen decided to end the relationship in December 2023, she faced threats, demands to return gifts, and eviction from their shared home.
After moving into a new residence, she was robbed on her first night, an incident she believes was orchestrated.
Karen also accused Nana of using his influence to manipulate the legal system.
A District Court granted him custody of their daughter, despite her concerns about the child’s well-being.
Her attempts to regain custody were dismissed, leaving her with limited visitation rights.
The threats escalated after a circuit court issued a restraining order against Nana. Karen alleged that he obtained her private information through illegal means and used media platforms to smear her reputation.
In a chilling incident, Nana and armed men stormed her home, harassed her family, and declared her wanted.
He allegedly paid bloggers to circulate her photos online in a bid to intimidate her.
“For seven years, I’ve endured emotional, physical, and financial abuse. I left the relationship to create a safe, happy space for my daughter, but our lives remain in danger,” Karen said.
Karen hopes that by sharing her story, she can prompt action to protect herself, her daughter, and others in similar situations. “I refuse to be silenced. I will continue to fight for my daughter and ensure she grows up in a safe and loving environment,” she vowed.
Her story highlights the challenges faced by victims of abuse in seeking justice, particularly when their abuser wields significant power and influence.
