Road Tolls to be digitalized- Roads and Highways Minister-Designate

The Roads and Highways Minister-Designate, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has announced plans to reintroduce road tolls in Ghana through a technology-driven system that eliminates physical barriers and manual collection.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee on Monday, January 20, Agbodza explained that the new system would address the inefficiencies and revenue leakages that plagued the previous toll collection mechanism.

“We decided to caution the government not to cancel road tolls but to find a way to improve the system,” Agbodza said, criticising the earlier cancellation of tolls as an act of “illegality” carried out without adequate consultation.

Agbodza expressed disappointment in the previous administration’s handling of toll revenues, which it claimed amounted to only ¢80 million. He described this as misleading, especially given that road contractors are owed substantial sums, with some debts reaching up to GH¢5,000.

The revamped toll system, according to Agbodza, will use modern technology to streamline collections, improve efficiency, and ensure that funds are directed toward road maintenance and development.

Unlike the old system, which relied on physical barriers and toll attendants, the new approach will eliminate traffic disruptions and provide a fair and reliable means of revenue generation.

Agbodza assured that the proposed system would benefit road users and contractors alike, creating a sustainable funding mechanism for critical road infrastructure projects.
